Top 3 LinkedIn Tips for Job Seekers
Top 3 LinkedIn Tips for Job SeekersTop 3 LinkedIn Tips for Job Seekers1LinkedIn may be how you stay connected with former colleagues, but its also an excellent way to find a new job, too. There are lots of LinkedIn tips for job seekers, but here the three main ways in which to boost your job searching efforts using LinkedIn.Be personal.Sure, LinkedIn does all the dirty work by creating a generic Id like to connect with you message. But if youre trying to truly connect with people who can help your job search, youll need to personalize that message. Take the time to craft a short message to each and every new person you reach out to. Its a good idea to remind the person how you know each other and communicate that you are looking forward to reconnecting with them. Feeling valued and important will entice a person to accept your invitation, which will hopefully help you in your job search.Be photogenic. When someone sends you a friend request on Facebook sans photo, youll fruchtwein lik ely delete it. The same holds true for LinkedIn, too. So be sure to always use a photo of yourself to accompany your profile. That way, your profile doesnt scream scam and people who are better with faces than names can recognize you more easily. And as for the photo, be sure that it is a current picture- and not one that is 40 pounds ago. Dress professionally and make sure that you look happy, friendly, and approachable in your photo.Be proactive. Some people think that LinkedIn functions a lot like laundry. You pop in a load and sit back waiting for something to happen. But LinkedIn is far more effective when you take action. So fill out your LinkedIn profile completely, and then reach out to your connections to check in and maintain a relationship. You can even recommend other people for them to connect with, as well as proactively seek out new contacts with your connections connections. And above all, make sure to update your profile often- either with accolades or new info- to a lways keep it fresh and attractive to eignung hiring managers. The next time youre on LinkedIn, be sure to utilize the social media tool to your best job searching advantageReaders, do you use LinkedIn as a job search resource? Seven ways to spot a liar in the workplace
Seven ways to spot a liar in the workplaceSeven ways to spot a liar in the workplaceMost workplace lies are discovered after the fact - after youve signed the faulty contract, hired the wrong person, or agreed to work on that career-limiting project. But wouldnt it be a great professional advantage to spot liars in action, before the harm was done?To sharpen your lie detection ability, follow these seven guidelines1. Begin with a baselineThe first and most important step in deception detection is observing a persons baseline behavior under relaxed or generally stress-free conditions so that later you can spot those meaningful deviations that signal stress and possible deception. While you are chatting informally, notice how peoples bodies look when they are relaxed. (What is their normal amount of eye contact and blink tarif? What kind of gestures do they use most frequently? What postures do they assume when comfortable? What is their pace of speech and tone of voice?)Ladders is now on SmartNewsDownload the SmartNews app and add the Ladders channel to read the latest career news and advice wherever you go.2. Watch for the initial signs of stressThere is no single verbal or nonverbal behavior that automatically means a person is lying. In fact, much of lie detection is actually stress detection. The mind has to work a lot harder to generate a false response. That is, in order to tell a lie, the brain first has to stop itself from telling the truth, then create the deception, and then deal with the accompanying emotions of anxiety, guilt, and the fear of being caught. So, for the vast majority of the individuals you interview or work with, the act of lying triggers a heightened stress response. Blood pressure, heart rate and breathing rates all increase. To relieve this nervous tension, liars may use pacifying gestures (rubbing their necks, bouncing their heels, fidgeting with jewelry, etc.) Their feet may even point to the door in a nonverbal signal that they wou ld like to escape. But our first response to stress (before we ready ourselves to fight or flee) is to freeze. So also pay attention if your usually animated colleague suddenly stops gesturing, has a forced or frozen smile, holds her breath, or tightly locks her ankles.By the way The biggest myth around deception is that liars cant look you in the eyes. In fact, some dont (especially small children), but polished liars may actually give too much eye contact. Two eye signals that are more accurate signs of stress and potential dishonesty are pupil dilation and a change in blink rate.3. Listen carefully to what people are telling youPeople may tell you the (literal) truth. If your boss says Im thinking of recommending you for the position, that is exactly what she means. She has not told you she did recommend you. She has not told you she will recommend you. All she said is that she is thinking about doing so. In the same way, if your colleague states, Thats all I can tell you, believ e him. He cant or wont tell you more but remember, that doesnt mean this is all he knows.Peoples choice of words often reveals more about them than they realize. When describing a situation, truthful people tend to use assertive, unambiguous words such as steal, cheat, forge. Liars use softer words like borrow, mistake, omit to minimize the act. A liars language also tends to become awkwardly formal and stilted, characterized especially by the avoidance of commonly used contractions. A liar might say, I did not have sex with that woman, Ms. Lewinsky, rather than I didnt have sex with Monica.Because of the mental effort it takes to tell a bald-faced lie, many people prefer to circumvent the truth with selective wording. They may avoid answering your question exactly as asked or they might say something that sounds like a denial, but isnt. For example If you accused a liar of spreading malicious gossip about a co-worker, he might respond, Do I look like someone who would do that? inst ead of saying I didnt do it. Liars may even go into attack mode and try to impeach your credibility or competence with statements meant to put you off- track or even to intimidate Why are you wasting my time with this stuff? or Do you know how long Ive been doing this job?Stay especially alert when people tell you what they are not doing (I dont want you to take this the wrong way, or Its not that I have anything to hide). Most often, thats a lie. Of course, youll have greater success in detecting verbal deceit cues if you and the person you are dealing with are from the same culture and speak the same language.4. Stay alert for emotional fakingThere are seven basic emotions that are shared, recognized, and expressed the same way around the world. Discovered and categorized by Paul Ekman and his colleagues at the University of California in San Francisco, the universal emotional expressions are joy, surprise, sadness, anger, fear, disgust, and contempt. When people dont genuinely fee l the emotion that they are trying to display, it often shows up in expressions that dont use all the muscles in the face that are typically part of that emotion. For example, if someones smile doesnt include the eye muscles, it is not a felt smile. Genuine smiles crinkle the corners of your eyes and change your entire face. Faked smiles involve the mouth only and are often asymmetrical. In monitoring emotional reactions, look also for simulated emotions, where people try to convince others that they feel a certain way by simulating the facial expression associated with that feeling. You may even get a gut feeling that your colleagues terribly sincere furrowed-brow or exaggerated display of anger feels somehow excessive. Realize, too, that any expression you see displayed for more than five to ten seconds is almost certainly being faked.5. bedrngnisice incongruenceWhen thoughts and words are in sync (when people believe what theyre saying) you can see it in their body language as the ir gestures, facial expressions and body postures fall into natural alignment with their verbal messages. Incongruence occurs when someones nonverbal behavior contradicts her words such as a side-to-side headshake while saying yes or a slight shoulder shrug (which is a sign of uncertainty) when assuring you theyre absolutely positive. Often, verbal-nonverbal incongruence is a sign of intentional deceit. At the very least, it shows that there is an inner conflict of some sort between what the person is thinking and what she is saying.6. Look for the telltale fourNonverbal cues often occur in what is called a gesture cluster a group of movements, postures and actions that reinforce a common point. Clusters play a key role in your growing ability to spot lies. A single nonverbal cue can have several meanings or mean nothing at all, but when it is reinforced by at least two other nonverbal signals, the meaning becomes more apparent.According to research by David DeSterno of Northeaste rn University, there is one specific cluster of nonverbal cues that proved statistically to be a highly accurate indicator of deception. The telltale four body language signals that are associated with duplicity are hand rubbing, face touching, crossing arms, and leaning away.7. Recognize the issues that interfere with your ability to detect falsehoodsAs previously stated, the act of lying triggers a heightened and observable stress response most people. But not always and not in everyoneNot all people display the same degree of emotion. Not all liars (especially if polished or pathological) show any signs of stress or guilt. Not all lies trigger a stress reaction. (Social lies, for example, are so much a part of daily life that they hardly ever distress the sender.)Not all stress signals indicate a lie. Truthful people may exhibit anxiety for a variety of perfectly innocent reasons - including the fear of not being believed or discomfort speaking about embarrassing or emotionally ar ousing topics. And sometimes our own biases get in the way. Research shows that surprisingly small factors such as where we meet someone, what they wear, what their voices sound like, whether their posture mimics ours, if they mention the names of people we know or admire, if they flatter us, if they are attractive and charming, or if they remind us of ourselves can enhance their credibility to the extent that it actually nullifies our ability to make sound judgments about them. When we put our trust in a deceptive co-worker or hire someone we havent properly investigated, it may not be due to their skill as a liar, but more about our own unconscious biases, vanities, desires, and self-deceptions.Lies and liars can kill collaboration and innovation, damage teams and organizations - and sometimes even destroy reputations and careers. Sharpening your deception detection skills (while recognizing your own biases) is a savvy resolution.Carol Kinsey Goman, Ph.D., is an international ke ynote speaker and leadership presence coach. The Best Resume Action Words Power Verbs List with 250+ Examples
The Best Resume Action Words Power Verbs List with 250+ ExamplesThe Best Resume Action Words Power Verbs List with 250+ ExamplesI am a really good team-player...I was responsible for managing...I dont really know what Im doing so Ill use the same ja genau over and over again...The last one is more or less the summation of the first two lines. Recruiters are so tired of going through the same points in hundreds of resumes that they develop an ability to read between the lines. And you cant blame them. When you scan resumes at that volume on a daily basis, it needs a whole anotlageher level of ingenuity to stand apart from everyone else. And thats where the action verbs for resume come in.The idea is not to sound like an English major who just graduated and is looking for avenues to flex his/her vocabulary muscles. The idea is to break free from the rest while being genuine and authentic. Our 2019 Guide to Resume Words with a focus on Action Verbs Examples will provide a detailed roadma p for you to shift your resume from oh well to wow.Well broadly be covering the following topicsWhat are action words or resume power verbs? Most people who are looking for quick hacks around making their resumes usually tend to scan the Job Description of the profiles they were in and pick points from there. Are you nodding silently because you do that too?Well, theres a downside to that. A JD is typically responsibility-based. Its designed to give the applicants an idea of the work theyll be doing.A resume, on the other hand, is achievement-based. Simply cherry-picking points from the JD will leave you high and dry. You need to turn the responsibility-based points in the JD to achievement-based points in the resume. How do you do that? Or rather, how do you that in a way which gets you those shortlists? Two words. Action verbs. Most resumes that we see, particularly IT resumes, will involve the same function endlessly across all profiles. So, for instance, if youve worked across 5 diff erent companies in IT, the work profile will more or less remain the same. But thats not the worst part. The worst part is you copypasting your points in one work profile into all other profiles. We know your work profiles were the same, but cant you show a tiny bit of initiative and at least try to not sound like a robot? What that essentially involves is a single work profile containing a few dozen points all beginning with Managing or installing, maintaining and troubleshooting...We get it. Your profile was the same. What else can I do?If you are asking that question right now, read on.Why action verbs for Resume?Let us start off by clarifying what action verbs are not. They are not steroids for your resumes. They wont beef up your achievements if there arent any to begin with. They are not designed to add unnecessary fluff to your resume. It shouldnt look like you used the default synonyms in MS Office for every word that you fancied - and believe us, most competent HRs and Recruite rs can figure that out too. They are simply the cherry on top. The cherry itself will do no good if there isnt a smackilicious cake below it. Action verbs for resume can only bolster your existing achievements but cant replace them. They dont describe your work profile. Or your self. They are only used to showcase how you accomplished your achievements. Additionally, they act as a breath of fresh air for the recruiters who are tired of seeing the same words day in and day out.Action verbs for resume possess an ability to elevate your responsibilities or achievements. You dont simply manage a team. You champion or spearhead a team. You dont reduce costs. You slash costs by x% or achieve a cost reduction by y%.The difference is subtle, but its significant enough to overshadow a dozen other resumes who are managing everything. Most people have a vague idea of the skills which they think are desirable. And they go on to include the same in their resume. For instance, I am an experienced Manag er possessing excellent team management and negotiation skills.Off the top, this looks like the partie who wrote it went through the JD and figured that the recruiters will be looking for Managers with team management and negotiation skills. But guess what. A hundred other applicants like you are doing the same. What do you do then?Show, dont tell.Show how you possess team management skills. Did you team surpass other teams w.r.t KPIs? Demonstrate how your negotiation skills helped achieve higher margins.Below examples will clear that right out.BORINGWOWPossesses excellent team management skillsChampioned a team of 15 to surpass KPI targets and secure the Top Rank out of 20 other regional teamsArmed with stellar negotiation skillsSpearheaded negotiations for the Microsoft B2B Strategic Alliance to achieve a cost reduction of 22%Difference between Resume Keywords and Resume VerbsWeve often seen people getting confused between Resume Keywords and Resume action words, but they are comple tely different concepts.Resume Keywords are centered around your base skills. They are the skills which the recruiters are looking for, which are critical to the vacancy which is advertised.Resume action words, on the other hand, are incorporated to elevate your existing achievements and refine them better. Their scope visvis Resume keywords is limited and are only there to present your achievements in a better light.A typical point in a resume will begin with an action word. The idea is to convince the recruiter how you accomplished something in a way better than the rest.Resume keywords will showcase your specific skills. They are majorly sourced from the Job Description, which indicate the priorities of the recruiter, the skills which the organization is looking for.For instance, process optimization, project management, cost control, etc. are all examples of resume keywords. On the other hand, directed, spearheaded, administered, etc. are all examples of resume action verbs.Resum e keywords play a critical role in getting you those shortlists that you want. Aligning and optimizing your resume along the lines of the keywords and skills which the recruiter is looking for will go a long way in surpassing the competition.Meanwhile, action words dont particularly help you directly in that regard, but they play a key role in refining your resume and helping you break away from the rest.Kickass Resume action verbs to replace commonly used wordsStrong Resume words for Planning or Strategic PlanningAdministeredDevelopedFormulatedPreparedRevisedAnticipatedDevisedIdentifiedPrioritizedStrategizeCommissionedEvaluatedObservedResearchedReservedDeterminedForecastedTailoredAdditionally, check out this great resource for more action verbs around Strategic PlanningGood Resume words for ManagingAlignedCultivatedDirectedEnabledFacilitatedFosteredGuidedHiredInspiredMentoredMobilizedMotivatedRecruitedRegulatedShapedSupervisedTaughtTrainedStrong Resume words for OrganizingAcquiredD esignatedActivatedCentralizedDesignedMapped outScheduledAdjustedFacilitatedOrderedChartedDispatchedEstablishedSecuredClassifiedSimplifiedArrangedImplementedProcuredAssembledContractedIncorporatedProgrammedSuggestedAssessedCoordinatedInstitutedRecruitedTrackedAssignedCustomizedIssuedRectifiedTrackedAuthorizedDelegatedGood Resume words for Supervising or LeadershipChairedAuthorizedCultivatedDelegatedDirectedEnabledExecutedFacilitatedFosteredGuidedHeadedHostedInspiredMentoredMobilizedOperatedOrchestratedOversawSpearheadedTrainedControlledInspectedScrutinizedReviewedRegulatedRefinedOversawOverhauledMonitoredMaintainedStrong Resume words for Executing or Worked on or Handled ArrangedCompiledComposedConstructedCreatedDevelopedEngaged InFashionedForgedActedAdministeredConductedFormulatedMade Progress OnOperatedOrganizedPerformedPreparedPerfectedPut TogetherSet UpUndertookTrainedExercisedInspectedScrutinizedReviewedRegulatedRefinedOversawOverhauledMonitoredMaintainedPursuedProcessedControl ledGood Resume words for CommunicationAdvocatedAuthoredClarifiedComposedConsultedConveyedConvincedCorrespondedDefinedExplainedFieldedIllustratedInfluencedInformedMediatedModeratedNegotiatedPromotedPersuadedPublicizedTransmittedSystematizedSynthesisedSurveyedSummarizedSubstantiatedSolicitedSpecifiedSanctionedRepresentedReportedRenderedReinforcedPerceivedPresentedMarketedInterpretedInstructedInferredEducatedTrainedDraftedDemonstratedDeliberatedBrainstormedArbitratedBriefedInterfacedStrong Resume words for HelpingAidedBolsteredEasedFamiliarizedPrescribedAccommodatedCoachedElevatedProvidedSavedAdvisedValidatedEnabledIntercededProtectedServedAlleviatedCooperatedEndorsedMobilizedRehabilitatedSustainedAssistedCounseledEnhancedModeledRelievedTutoredAssuredDealtEnrichedPolishedRescuedGood Resume words for Creativity or Problem SolvingAlteredDraftedOverhauledBuiltEnhancedPatchedCorrectedEstablishedPilotedCraftedFashionedPioneeredDesignedConceivedRebuiltDeterminedInitiatedResolvedDevisedInvent edBrainstormedTheorizedSynthesizedRevitalizedRevampedRemediedInvestigatedRemodeledFormulatedEngineeredDecipheredDebuggedConceptualizedStrong Resume words for Responsible for or Getting ResultsAccomplishedOperatedTargetedAcquiredPartneredRejuvenatedAchievedPerformedReduced / MinimizedActed AsPreparedRealizedCreatedProducedQualifiedFinishedSecuredQualifiedForgedSucceeded InOrchestratedNavigatedUndertookLaunchedNegotiatedIntegratedInnovatedIntegratedGeneratedExpeditedExcelledEliminatedDemonstratedGood Resume words for Team PlayerUnitedAssimilatedAcknowledgedCoalescedCollaboratedContributedDiversifiedEmbracedEncouragedEnergizedBlendedHarmonizedIgnitedJoinedVolunteeredMergedParticipatedPartneredResume Buzzwords 2019 List of Resume Verbs to Include and AvoidWhat to AvoidWhat to IncludeTipsHard WorkerAchievedMention instances to demonstrate your achievementsCreative/Outside the Box/InnovativeCreatedShow, dont tell. How to Write Great Headlines for the Web
How to Write Great Headlines for the Web How to Write Great Headlines for the Web Think of writing headlines and you immediately think of print media. But writing great headlines for the web is much different than writing one for your local newspaper. A newspaper writer can simply insert Smith Wins! in large, bold font for a headline the day after an election. Writing an attention-grabbing headline for a website takes more planning and usually more than two words. 1. Focus on Descriptive Words and Phrases Because of the nature of the web, Smith Wins! doesnt go far enough to tell users about the story. Who is Smith? Did he or she win a marathon, a lottery or the Republican primary for U.S. Senate? Youve probably learned that short headlines grab more attention than longer ones, but for the web, short headlines can undersell your story and cost you clickthroughs. Roxanne Smith Wins Bitter Republican Primary Struggle for U.S. Senate is a headline that is more descriptive and is more likely to be clicked. Keep in mind that if your headline isnt necessarily connected with a photograph or is transmitted automatically to social networking sites, you need to write something that can stand on its own. 2. Use Search Engine Optimization When Writing Headlines Search engine optimization is another reason to write a longer headline than Smith Wins. Google, Bing, Yahoo and other search engines use your keyword phrase to help readers find your story. When writing headlines for the web, your goal should always be to have your story show up on the first page of a search engines results. There are many factors in succeeding, but writing a headline that contains keywords for your story is a start. Roxanne Smith, Republican Primary and U.S. Senate are all terms that a search engine will notice and remember. Those are also words that a search engine user will likely type in a search box. Put the two together and your story on the election will attract more readers. 3. Draw the User Into the Story Weve all seen headlines that inform us but do not entice us to click through to read the story. If youre a website writer, thats a lost opportunity to build your stats. If Im a reader and all I want to know is who won the race, Smith Wins answered my question. Unless I want details on the vote count, I will likely move on. But by adding the words Bitter and Struggle to your headline, you will pique users interests beyond the election night victory to get them to click through to the story. In some forms of media, this is called tease writing- you are teasing the user into wanting more information. In this case, you did it by adding two words to a static headline. Why was the race a bitter struggle? You are forcing users to click through to find out. Writing effective headlines for the web takes some thought. But with just a little practice, you can boost your site stats by building straightforward, yet compelling headlines that sell your story to the search engines and to your readers.

Overseas Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) Information
Overseas Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) Information Overseas Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) Information When considering military service, one realization you must be aware of is that you could be stationed anywhere on the planet to support the mission of the Department of Defense. While no military deployment or overseas duty station or any duty station, for that matter is permanent, it can be expensive to live far from home. The higher cost of living that can accompany an overseas military deployment is compensated monetarily through the Cost of Living Allowance (COLA). This is different from the Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH), which accounts for a significant part of the rent or mortgage of the military member when at a permanent duty station. In addition to salary and bonuses, the military provides several allowances to offset the cost of living and housing for service members. For instance, soldiers who live on an Army base in the barracks receive military housing and meals for free. However, if your duty situation requires you to live off base, the military provides allowances for such things as housing, meals, clothing, travel, moving, and family separation. Overseas COLA The Overseas Cost of Living Allowance is the militarys answer to its members being stationed in various places throughout the world where the cost of living is higher. The COLA is a non-taxable supplement based on average pay and the cost of housing for the local population. Depending upon where you are stationed, how many years youve been in the service, your rank, and if you have dependents or not, the COLA will vary greatly. The average supplement is $300 per month. The basic measurement is a comparison of continental United States (CONUS) shopping behavior and the aggregate shopping behavior at each overseas location. Military members are stationed at more than 600 different locations overseas, and this variable cost of living allowance helps monetarily when the military member and family have to live among the population where the military presence is located. (This includes Alaska and Hawaii.) Overseas COLA is calculated by a complex economic database that takes into account the spending habits of Americans at home in comparison to prices for similar goods and services overseas. The result of this comparison is an index that reflects the cost of living. If prices at home or abroad fluctuate, it may affect the cost of living allowance. Therefore, the COLA is not a fixed amount. Currency values can also affect the COLA. As the dollar strengthens or weakens worldwide compared to the currency of the military members duty station, the COLA can also change. These COLA adjustments are either immediate or made incrementally, depending on whether the payment will increase or decrease. For COLA changes based on data, increases are made immediately, but COLA reductions based on data are phased in per month to help minimize the impact. COLA changes based on currency are effective immediately for both increases and decreases. The Cost of Living Allowance does not reimburse expenses but rather increases the paycheck of the military member every two weeks; this will offset higher overseas prices of goods and services. It does not compensate for remoteness, hardship, or non-availability of goods and services at remote duty stations. Other Military Payments and Allowances Military members may receive other payments and allowances in addition to military pay: The Basic Allowance for Subsistence is used to pay for food; its typically a few hundred dollars a month. The Basic Allowance for Housing offsets the cost of housing when members live off-base; it varies from city to city. A Clothing Allowance pays for the replacement of uniforms and uniform decorations. For jobs that require civilian clothes, the military provides a civilian clothing allowance. The Moving Allowance pays for the transportation of household goods during a permanent change-of-station (PCS) move. Temporary Lodging Allowance covers the cost of temporary housing during a PCS move. Soldiers assigned or deployed to locations where the military will not move families will receive a Family Separation Allowance.

Inductive Reasoning Definition and Examples
Inductive Reasoning Definition and Examples Inductive Reasoning Definition and Examples Whats inductive reasoning, and why is it important in the workplace? Inductive reasoning is a type of logical thinking that involves forming generalizations based on specific incidents youve experienced, observations youve made, or facts you know to be true or false. Inductive vs. Deductive Reasoning Inductive reasoning is different from deductive reasoning, in which you start with a generalization or theory, and then test it by applying it to specific incidents. Inductive reasoning is an important critical thinking skill that many employers look for in their employees. That makes it a useful skill to highlight in your job applications and in your job interviews. Inductive Reasoning in the Workplace Inductive reasoning is an example of a soft skill. Unlike hard skills, which are specific to your job and generally involve acquired knowledge, soft skills relate to how you interact with people, social situations, and ideas. Both types are essential for success in the workplace, but soft skills are arguably harder to teach and to learn. Because of that, many employers place a premium on hiring candidates who possess soft skills and can demonstrate them during the interview process. Employers value workers who can think logically as they solve problems and carry out tasks, and who can discern patterns and develop strategies, policies, or proposals based on those tendencies. These employees are practicing inductive reasoning. Examples of Inductive Reasoning In practice, inductive reasoning often appears invisible. You might not be aware that youâre taking in information, recognizing a potential pattern, and then acting on your hypothesis. But, if youâre a good problem solver, chances are that these examples will feel familiar: 1. A teacher notices that his students learned more when hands-on activities were incorporated into lessons, and then decides to regularly include a hands-on component in his future lessons. 2. An architect discerns a pattern of cost overages for plumbing materials in jobs and opts to increase the estimate for plumbing costs in subsequent proposals. 3. A stockbroker observes that Intuit stock increased in value four years in a row during tax season and recommends clients buy it in March. 4. A recruiter conducts a study of recent hires who have achieved success and stayed on with the organization. She finds that they graduated from three local colleges, so she decides to focus recruiting efforts on those schools. 5. A salesperson presents testimonials of current customers to suggest to prospective clients that her products are high quality and worth the purchase. 6. A defense attorney reviews the strategy employed by lawyers in similar cases and finds an approach that has consistently led to acquittals. She then applies this approach to her own case. 7. A production manager examines cases of injuries on the line and discerns that many injuries occurred towards the end of long shifts. The manager proposes moving from 10-hour to 8-hour shifts based on this observation. 8. A bartender becomes aware that customers give her higher tips when she shares personal information, so she intentionally starts to divulge personal information when it feels appropriate to do so. 9. An activities leader at an assisted living facility notices that residents light up when young people visit. She decides to develop a volunteer initiative with a local high school, connecting students with residents who need cheering up. 10. A market researcher designs a focus group to assess consumer responses to new packaging for a snack product. She discovers that participants repeatedly gravitate towards a label stating â15 grams of protein. The researcher recommends increasing the size and differentiating the color of that wording. Highlight Inductive Reasoning Skills in Your Job Search If the employer explicitly mentions inductive reasoning in the job listing, or if you know it is critical to the job, you might mention it in your job application materials. For example, you can provide an example of successfully using inductive reasoning in your cover letter, or you can include inductive reasoning in your resume summary or list of skills. A question about your inductive reasoning skills might come up in a first or second interview. As a job candidate, you should review your past roles and identify situations in which you have applied inductive reasoning. Think of times when inductive reasoning resulted in positive outcomes, as this information can help convince employers that you can independently apply knowledge learned on the job and pick up the role quickly. When highlighting your inductive reasoning during an interview, use the STAR interview response technique. This is an acronym that stands for: Situation Task Action Result First, describe the situation (Where you were working? What project were you working on?). Then, describe the task (What was your responsibility? What problem did you have to solve? What observations did you make?). Next, explain the action you took (What solution did you implement? How did you translate your observations into a solution or action?). Finally, explain the result (How did your action help the problem, or help the company more broadly?). This technique will clearly show the interviewer that you have inductive reasoning skills that can add value to a company.

7 Most Attractive Skills to Add to Your Resume
7 Most Attractive Skills to Add to Your Resume 7 Most Attractive Skills to Add to Your Resume Here are 7 skills to add to your resume: 1. Achievements Rather than simply listing your daily duties under each job, you should strive to include things youve achieved. Employers want people who can generate results and innovate rather than passively do their work, especially in leadership positions. For example, if you were named as employee of the month at some point by the higher-ups, you should add that. If you developed a new method of office workflow that saved the company time and money, include that too. 2. Writing and Communication Skills The ability to effectively communicate, both written and verbally, is a must-have qualification for just about any job. Whether youre a worker in a factory or a CEO, you must be able to clearly and effectively communicate with clients, employees, stockholders, other managers, and contractors, to name a few. Managers must be able to guide their employees and work out solutions to problems when they arise. Most employees need to be able to write error-free emails or letters for both internal and external eyes. Unclear verbal communication can cause instructions to be followed incorrectly, and written communication riddled with mistakes can be a massive embarrassment to an organization. These are simply basic skills every employee needs to have, and you can show you have them by making sure your resume and cover letter are error-free. 3. Decision-Making Skills If youre looking to get promoted to a chief operating officer position (COO), one of the most important COO job-essential skills is decision-making ability. To be a leader at a company, you must be able to make the hard calls. On your resume, talk about decisions you had to make in your previous jobs and demonstrate how you came to the correct conclusion. Its okay if split-second decisions arent always your thing- taking everything into account and weighing both sides of the issue can be equally desirable and effective. Adding instances like that on your resume can show that youâre an immensely thoughtful and intelligent person. 4. Tech Skills No matter what field youre applying to, tech skills are some of the most notable qualifications. You should always list the relevant programs youâre proficient in on your resume. If your industry heavily uses a particular software, like Photoshop for graphic designers, for example, include that on your resume, as well as other lesser-known programs that youâve used. Fortunately, its fairly easy to learn tech skills, even on your own, though taking a class offered through your local community college wouldnt hurt. Most software companies offer free trials so you can learn to use the software on your own if you have no experience with it. 5. Leadership Skills Employers want to see that you were highly regarded enough to be placed in a leadership position. This is especially important if the position youre applying for is in management. You can demonstrate your capacity for leadership on your resume by detailing what teams youâve managed in the past and the successes you drove them to achieve. You can discuss how well you were able to create balanced teams, for example, and cultivate the strengths of each member of your team. Promotion to a management position also speaks very well of others faith in your leadership abilities, especially if it happened fairly quickly after you began working at a particular company. 6. Ability to Work on a Team and Solo Nearly all jobs require some form of teamwork. But its also important for you to be able to work and be productive on your own as well. Most people lean one way or the other, but to be the most desirable and reliable employee, you must be able to do both. Try to demonstrate both aptitudes on your resume by outlining what youâve brought to teams youve been on, as well as what youve accomplished on your own. If youre not particularly good at one or the other, work at conditioning yourself to work better alone or on teams. Use time management software or volunteer in an organization where you will have to work with others to gain this experience. 7. Degrees and Certifications For many jobs, youâll need to display some kind of college degree or other professional qualification to be considered qualified for the role. With some jobs, even if you have years of experience, you wont be considered for a position without the proper educational credentials. What can be even more important is specific certifications. For example, if youâre a paralegal, becoming a certified paralegal by passing the rigorous test offered by the professional organization NALA will make you a much more qualified candidate than an applicant who just has a degree. Some careers require you be licensed, such as in nursing, and youâll simply be unable to acquire a job in that field without it. Being certified in certain software programs or for certain technologies can also be highly desirable depending on the position. These are all the skills to add to your resume or develop if you dont have them yet. Each and every one of the seven qualifications mentioned above are what employers look for, especially when hiring for management positions. Remember to follow all the other standard resume advice as well. This includes adding a resume summary statement at the top to catch the hiring managers attention, quantifying your achievements whenever possible, using verbs and active voice rather than passive voice, and omitting any unnecessary information. Put these most sought after qualifications on your resume and you should start receiving calls for interviews in no time at all. The Benefits of a Creative Working Environment
The Benefits of a Creative Working Environment The Benefits of a Creative Working Environment If you feel your employees aren't coming up with as many innovative ideas as you'd like, you need to take a look at your corporate culture and creative work environment. Are you quashing great ideas by ignoring or criticizing them? Or do you nurture employee creativity by encouraging people to take the best approach possible, even if it's untested - thereby fostering a positive environment? Maybe instead of other employment solutions, you need to consider ways to unleash the creativity of your existing employees. Does your workplace offer a creative work environment? Unless your small business is willing to take smart risks, it won't thrive. Ask yourself the following questions to find out whether your work environment is helping or hindering employee creativity: Is authority and responsibility delegated? Not many people can be creative for creativity's sake. Employees need to be empowered before they can start coming up with great ideas. Even the most unimaginative workers become creative when they have a stake in the outcome of a project. Are employees aware of the company's vision? To come up with creative ideas, employees need a few guiding principles. Make sure they know your company's vision and keep it in mind when they're developing ideas and solutions. Does your team brainstorm regularly? Brainstorming capitalizes on synergy. If you conduct brainstorming sessions properly, your employees should be able to come up with better ideas working as a group than they would on their own. If you brainstorm with them, they also get a feel for just how far out of the box you want them to think. This assists immensely in fostering a creative work environment. Do you venture off-site for creative sessions? Sometimes, an office space - no matter how casual it is - can still be stifling. For a change of pace, try venturing off-site: a restaurant, park, beach - you name it. You may be surprised at the ideas you or your coworkers come up with in a more relaxed and positive environment. Are employees allowed to decorate their workspace? This may seem like a trivial tip, but it does help foster a positive environment where creativity can flow more freely. Freedom in decoration allows your employees to be inspired by what means the most to them. Maybe one person will see a photo of a favorite getaway place and feel a sense of calm in a stressful situation. Or maybe someone else works best when surrounded by plants and flowers. As long as decorations are appropriate and don't negatively impact day-to-day business, allow a little leeway and let your employees add personality to their workspaces. Hiring? We can help: REQUEST TALENT Fostering a creative work environment for employees Perhaps the most important aspect of risk-taking - the factor with the most profound long-term implications in fostering a creative work environment - is the way a manager treats a new idea once it's implemented. An old adage says that while success has many parents, failure is an orphan. Effective managers don't abandon employees who suggest ideas that don't pan out. Nor do good managers take full credit if the idea proves successful. Instead, they reflect collectively, talking candidly and supportively with their team. What worked? What needs to be improved? What factors impacted the idea's implementation? Most importantly, how can this problem or project be better tackled in the future? Finally, here's another simple technique that's vastly underused among businesses: When good managers make a mistake, they openly admit it. It's remarkable how motivational it can be for employees to hear bosses concede that they, too, make wrong decisions sometimes.

How to Explain Being Fired From a Job During an Interview
How to Explain Being Fired From a Job During an Interview How to Explain Being Fired From a Job During an Interview How to Explain Being Fired During an Interview Donât get burned during your first interview after getting fired. Your first job interview after being fired can be intimidating. You probably think you have no chance at getting the job. Who wants to hire someone that has just been canned? You are probably nervous about how to answer when the recruiter asks about it. Being asked about why you were terminated is one of the most challenging and intimidating interview questions. It is uncomfortable and awkward. First, don't panic and don't be embarrassed. People get fired every day. These people go on to find new jobs, and you will find another job too. Don't beat yourself up or doubt you'll be getting a job after being fired. Remember all of the good you have accomplished in your career. You will (without a doubt) be asked to explain being fired so be prepared to discuss it during an interview. If you were the recruiter, wouldn't you want to know? Have no fear. You can answer the question. Your answer could even help you land the position if done correctly. So what is the best way to respond? These tips will help you maneuver through the dreaded question and help in getting a job after being fired. Honesty is the best policy There is no easy way to explain to a prospective employer that you were fired from your previous job. The best approach is simple. Be honest. Tell the truth and be transparent with all of your answers. The worst way to handle the question is to lie about it. Lying is like a forest fire. It spreads. One lie will lead to another and another. There is a chance that your potential employer will find out about the lie, and no one will hire a dishonest candidate. Truth has a funny way of always coming out. Don't let it cause you to get fired again. While you should absolutely be honest when you explain being fired, you do not have to give every nitty-gritty detail about why you and your old boss did not get along or how your error cost the company billions of dollars. Keep your answer high level. Explain the circumstance briefly and move on. The last thing you want is to draw extra attention to the situation. You do not want to overemphasize your termination. Leave emotion out Resist the urge to badmouth your previous employer. Even if you believe you were wronged, remaining objective and not placing blame are key. As much as it may pain you, stay positive and avoid saying anything negative about your previous boss or company. It will only make you look distasteful and defensive. The recruiter and hiring manager are more likely to side with your previous employer if you start to play the blame game. Start and end the conversation on a positive note. The employer is evaluating if you will be a positive addition to his team. No one likes a whiner. Show that you've learned Take responsibility in your part of the situation. There are always two sides to every story. Even if you feel as if you were the victim, your actions had something to do with it. Remain mature and professional by showing how you grew personally and professionally through this experience. By answering in this fashion, you will demonstrate strength, self-confidence, and character. The hiring manager will love to hear that you turned a negative situation into an asset. Nobody is perfect. Not you, not the recruiter, and not a single employee at the prospective company you are interviewing with. Perhaps even one (or several) of the people you talk to during the hiring process have been fired in the past. The hiring manager does not expect you to be perfect. He is going to realize that you have made mistakes. The important part is that you have learned from them. Share how much you have grown since being terminated and how you will approach similar situations in the future. Use the learning experience as an advantage for your next job. Practice makes perfect If you are at all nervous about answering questions on your termination or explain being fired, the best thing you can do for yourself is to practice what you will say. Getting fired is an emotional experience, and it may take some practice to talk about it openly and objectively. Write down your thoughts. Practice in front of a mirror or even videotape yourself. Ask someone to give you a mock interview. This will help prepare you for the real thing. Watch your body language and confidence level. Keep practicing until you like what you see. Remember that people get fired all of the time. It does not mean you are a bad employee, and your interviewer will not think poorly of you. Nor does it mean you're never getting a job after being fired. Don't make a big deal out of it. Remember that you are your worst critic. No one is going to judge you for being fired. In fact, most workers will be fired or let go at some point in their career. Answer the question with confidence. Chalk it up as a learning experience. Show the recruiter who you are and what you have to offer. You are a strong candidate. Your termination was merely a speed bump in your career path. Follow these tips and strategies outlined above, and then walk out with your head held high. Focus on the future! The past is behind you. Want more help preparing for your next interview?
